Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. Luke 22:36 Did you read the above verse carefully? That's right, Jesus instructs his followers two things: build up your financial reserves and arm yourself adequately. Now history doesn't remember the apostles as financiers and armed guerrillas. But at the same time -- Jesus said what he said, right? Take for instance financial preparedness. Is there anything wrong with being prepared financially? Of course not! Same thing with being armed adequately. There's no question about this in my mind on a personal level, when it comes to your family for instance. But what about church? Should you go armed to church? Should churches have armed security guards at the time of their services? In case you have some doubts about these matters, read the following records of violent attacks that have occurred in churches. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what's the right thing to do here. Churches must think of security matters, not only pray for the safety of their members. This is not to say I don't believe in God's protection. I do. But I also know that God has given us heads on our shoulders to think with. I can speak for myself and tell you that I personally was attacked in my church office years ago by a church member who had mental problems. I ended up with a swollen face for a week but it might have been much worse. It has been reported that across the world in each nation about 10% of the people have criminal inclinations. This is one of the consequences of the fall of man. The world is what it is and we can change it by holding hands and singing "kumbaya". We must be responsible fathers, husbands and leaders. Who knows -- somebody might be needing to read this, I don't know. It might even save someone's life. Regardless of what your theology, is do yourself a favor and read the following report. Last Sunday's shooting at this church in California (the first on the list below) should alert every concerned citizen and a Christian to the danger we face in this world.
